Fahamu website gathering information on sexual orientation and gender identity
The Fahamu Refugee Legal Aid Network now has a special page on sexual orientation and gender identity, managed by Eddie Bruce-Jones, who also offers help to refugee legal advisors who are representing LGBTI asylum claims. Attached to his page is a list of countries, and for each country page, a team of interns will be filling in the legal situation for LGBTI individuals in that location; case law where it exists; information on public attitudes and/or capacity of state to protect; lists of NGOs who wish to be on the web who are working in LGBTI advocacy and legal representation in or for that country; Country of Origin specialists prepared to offer their services to legal advisors who are representing LGBTI cases for refugee status; and other relevant materials. This is in line with the Fahamu Refugee Legal Aid Network objective for its website to be a low-bandwidth one-stop shop for providers of legal aid for refugees.
We need your help to accomplish this task. Please send suggestions to Intern Team Leader, Peter Kikomaga.
Forced Migration Review (FMR) request for feedback on upcoming themes
The editors of FMR are requesting feedback on a list of proposed issues they intend to work on over this year and the next. The issues are: North Africa; fragile states; preventing displacement; transitional justice; deportation, and alternatives to detention; humanitarian access; gender and sexual orientation-related limits to protection of forced migrants; reproductive health.
The timings and the order of publication will depend very much on both the interest shown in these topics by individuals and organisations wanting to submit material for publication, and on the interest of organisations and governments in funding them. The editors welcome suggestions for articles/authors. They are also looking for partnerships with organisations and governments to work on these themes — in terms of content and/or financial support. To contact the editors with your feedback, send them an email.
Request for information on Belize
The Immigration Justice Clinic at Cardozo School of Law is representing a client in removal proceedings who may be able to assert a defence of derivative citizenship. They are looking to get in touch with anyone who has any experience in or understanding of what constituted legitimation in Belize (relevant period: 1981–1999) or any experience with family law in Belize. If you have any information or resources relevant to these issues, please email Tania de la Cruz and Henriette Vinet-Martin, or call +1 212 790 0895.
